Skudai, 7 March 2020 – TEDxUTM2020, powered by UTM Centre for Student Innovation and Technology Entrepreneurship (UTM XCITE) was recently held at the Sultan Ibrahim Chancellery Building, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM). In its fourth year running since 2017, TEDxUTM2020 wants to spread message through it theme, ‘Theory X’.
X, often known as an unknown yet to be discovered, viewed by TEDxUTM2020 as boundless prospect to be explored, symbolized by two crossing lines. Those single lines have been pulled to cross each other that metaphorically means people with the same energy and positive purposes will be pulled together and meet one another anytime and anywhere. Although humans are set apart by their own mind and thoughts, TEDxUTM2020 believes that every individual has their unique story to share. This was the message in which TEDxUTM2020 want to convey to the public.
Extending their original intention to bring in ideas worth spreading to local community, TEDxUTM2020 had invited photography artist Keda.Z, clinical psychologist Dr. Chua Sook Ning and Gary Yap, founder of MYReaders Alex Lim, lecturer and strategist Dr. Helen Tan Sui Hong, action stunt woman Germaine Yeap, author Zamir Mohyedin, neuro-linguistic programming master coach Myke Celis, entrepreneur Wythe See Yuan Feng, actress Koe Yeet, model Azfar Firdaus and lastly, founder of ShaShinKi.com Dr. Koh Kho King.
TEDxUTM is an annual event of UTM since 2017. In addition to sharing sessions by the 12 invited speakers as the highlights of the event, there were also merchandise booth selling products, photobooth, board game, claw machine, VR station, drone flying station, barista workshop and korean flower arrangement workshop which had attracted a lot of students to come over.
One of the accomplishment for TEDxUTM2020 was that they had successfully managed to invite Kapten Buehbossa as a special guest to perform magic bubble show inside the hall, which had never been done in previous TEDxUTM event. A lot of UTM performers had been invited such as Losting Music Club in collaboration with Kapten Buehbossa, Wushu Club in collaboration with 24 Festive Drums, Flying Dance Studio (FDS) in collaboration with Freedom Dance Crew (FDC) and these performances were indeed eye-catching and won thunderous applause from the audiences.
According to the director of TEDxUTM2020, Lim Meng Kei, the committees consist of a total of 38 students from various schools. The whole team has spent for around a year in planning the event to make sure everything run smoothly. Throughout the whole process, she said the most challenging part was raising funds. She also revealed that the tickets were sold out within 45 minutes. Even though there were many who still wanted to buy the tickets, the committee were not able to open more tickets due to limitation set, which according to the TED regulations, the number of attendees for each TED event either 100 seats or 1000 seats. At present, the number of attendees for TEDxUTM is limited to 100. “We hope to move on to thousand in the future,” said Lim Meng Kei.
From the 1st of March 2020 to 3rd of March 2020, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) held the first ever South Business Simulation Challenge 2020, organized by UTM Centre for Student Innovation & Technology Entrepreneurship (UTM XCITE) in collaboration with Azman Hashim International Business School (AHIBS). The program involved a total of 25 participants from 5 Public Higher Education Institutions in southern part of Peninsular Malaysia namely UTM, Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM), Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM), Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTEM) as well as Polytechnic Metro Johor Bahru, where participants each institutions are just and limited to 5 participants only.
SBSC 2020 used MonsoonSIM, an award-winning business simulation and gamification education platform, as the core basis for the program. The platform recognized by Enterprise Resources Planning (Business) – SAP and has been used in business education in various universities around the globe since 2013. MonsoonSIM allows educators, lecturers, teachers to change the way they teach the business concepts and indirectly provide students with early exposure to many aspects of business processes.
SBSC 2020 was a 3 days program where the first 2 days took place at UTM Maker Space, while the third and final day of the program took place at Cyberpenuer Lab, AHIBS. The first day of the program was just a short session compromising of minute introductory activities such as registration, briefings and ice-breaking. In the second day the program starts to intensify where participants get to understand, train and experience all 12 modules in the MonsoonSIM simulation, in stages, coached predominantly by Mr. Shafudin bin Mohd Yatim (AHIBS), Dr. Mohamad Shah Bin Kassim (AHIBS) and Dr. Zulkifli Hamisan @ Khair (School of Human Resource Development & Psychology, (SHARPS)), whom are certified, skilled and experienced guiding UTM students in various national and international competitions from 2016 to 2018.
On the third day, the entire morning session was slotted for participants to practice on what they learnt the day prior. Then in the afternoon a 2 round competition was held, in where the teams were evaluated and positioned according to the average score from both rounds. Tong Xin Jo, Ong Jia Eek, Muhammad Hafiz Faisal, Tan Lun Yong and Lian Tat Xian (Team Explosion Z) from UTM for won first prize and brought home RM1000, certificates of achievement, and a trophy. The second prize of RM700, certificates of achievement, and a trophy went to Team Tuah from Universiti Teknikal Melaka Malaysia (UTeM). The third prize went to Team Gladiators from Universiti Teknologi MARA Johor Campus and they carried home RM500, certificates of achievement, and a trophy. Consolation prized went to Team Untouchables from Politeknik METrO Johor Bahru and Team Paritking from Universiti Tun Hussien Onn Malaysia, where they both carried home RM300 and certificates of achievement.
All in all, SBSC 2020 was a success thanks to the mentors, organizing committees, participants and joint partners of Southern Business Simulation Challenge 2020. The closing ceremony was attended and officiated by Dr. Noriza Mohd Jamal, the Director of Accounting and Finance Program of AHIBS and also attended by Muhammad Nabil Fikri Bin Yahaya, Research Officer of UTM XCITE, Mr. Shafudin bin Mohd Yatim, a senior lecturer and certified MonsonSIM trainer of AHIBS, and Dr. Zulkifli Hamisan @ Khair, senior lecturer of SHARPS. Students who have the potentials will be selected to be members of the team representing their respective institution to the national level, and further to the Southeast Asia level.

Approximately 300 students thronged UTM Centre for Student Innovation and Technology Entrepreneurship (UTM XCITE)’s Innovation Unit building to participate in Sustainable Entrepreneurial Mindset Showcase 2019 (SEMS 2.0) on 3 December 2019, organized by Office of Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic & International) and UTM XCITE. This marked the second time SEMS was organized to enable students to experience entrepreneurship processes.

The students from UHAK and UBSS courses demonstrated their products and services that were developed based on United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). They have been guided by entrepreneurship lecturers from the beginning of the semester. Each group was given 10 minutes to pitch and demonstrate their innovation to judges that included experts from industry as well as academic. The purpose of the event was to expose UTM students to entrepreneurial activities, which included the vital processes of validating ideas and prototype development.

QTPI, a group from Faculty of Science, with their product Eggshells Fuel, won Best of the Best award, bringing home RM400 and a medal of achievement as well as certificate of appreciation. They were supervised by Dr Muhamad Afzamiman Bin Aripin (Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities). Sprout Crowd, a group from the School of Mechanical Engineering supervised by Dr Sabrinah Adam (Azman Hashim International Business School), with their product Bright Sprout won second place while third prize went to Smart Alarm from the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities. The group was supervised by Dr. Corrienna Abdul Talib (Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities).

JOHOR BAHRU, 15 Okt. — Malaysian Technology Development Corporation (MTDC) sekali lagi telah menganjurkan program MTDC Business Challenge bersama-sama Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) melalui Pusat Inovasi Mahasiswa dan Keusahawanan Teknologi UTM (UTM XCITE). Seramai 90 orang pelajar universiti awam dan swasta, politeknik serta kolej komuniti yang terdiri daripada 34 kumpulan mengambil bahagian dalam MTDC Business Challenge (MBC) 2019 yang bermula 11 hingga 15 Oktober 2018 di Sunway Putra Hotel, Kuala Lumpur. MBC 2019.

Mereka terpilih daripada 93 kumpulan yang telah menghantar penyertaan semenjak bulan July 2019. Berdasarkan tema pertandingan “Creating a Social Impact through Industry 4.0 Innovation”, ianya terbuka kepada pelajar-pelajar prasiswazah tempatan dari institusi pengajian tinggi awam dan swasta di Malaysia. Peserta mengetengahkan idea-idea produk inovasi mereka di mana pemenang MBC 2019 bakal diberikan peluang untuk menyertai Program Accelerator MTDC.
MBC 2019 merupakan salah satu program yang mendukung usaha dan minat pelajar yang membangunkan inovasi dan teknologi di peringkat awal. Ia juga menjadi platform pemecutan ke arah pengkomersilan bagi produk dan inovasi oleh pelajar institusi pengajian tinggi serta memupuk semangat usahawan muda.

Sepanjang tempoh 4 hari program, para peserta mengikuti sesi bootcamp, clinic dan pitching yang dikendalikan oleh penceramah dan fasilitator daripada MTDC dan UTM.
Menurut Ketua Eksekutif MTDC, Dato’ Norhalim Yunus, adalah penting memupuk budaya inovasi dalam kalangan masyarakat di bangku sekolah supaya graduan yang dihasilkan dapat memenuhi pasaran revolusi 4.0 yang kompetitif dan berdaya saing.
“Pelajar-pelajar dari kolej komuniti, politeknik dan universiti adalah sumber manusia yang akan menyumbang kepada inovasi dalam syarikat IKS. Mereka ini perlu dari awal untuk dilatih untuk berfikir secara inovatif ”
Pada upacara penutup hari ini, kumpulan Pico Hydro dari Universiti Teknikal Melaka Malaysia (UTeM) berjaya membawa pulang hadiah utama berupa RM 10,000 dana pembangunan produk beserta khidmat nasihat daripada pihak MTDC. Mereka juga membawa pulang hadiah wang tunai RM 500, sijil pencapaian dan plak.
UTM juga tidak pulang dengan tangan kosong, Balak – The Tree Cutting Robot telah berjaya mendapat tempat kedua. Mereka membawa pulang hadiah berupa RM 7,500 dana pembangunan produk beserta khidmat nasihat daripada pihak MTDC, hadiah wang tunai RM 500, sijil pencapaian dan plak.
Satu lagi kumpulan daripada UTM yang telah berjaya mendapat tempat ketiga adalah HF Robotics. Mereka membawa pulang hadiah berupa RM 6,000 dana pembangunan produk beserta khidmat nasihat daripada pihak MTDC, hadiah wang tunai RM 500, sijil pencapaian dan plak.
Kemenangan ini membuktikan UTM menyediakan eksosistem yang kondusif bagi pelajar untuk menjadi usahawan berjaya.
23 April 2019, Johor Bahru – Johor Bahru, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia successfully organized the first ever innovation competition that focus secondary school students from B40 group. Five groups from five schools around Johor were selected from twenty-four (24) submission involving 72 students. The five groups had undergone two-days bootcamp and eight-weeks mentoring session. They are required to build their innovative product from scratch using microcontroller namely Arduino. This program is sponsored by U.S. Embassy that focuses on students from B40. The competition also involve 6 states namely Sabah, Sarawak, Kelantan, Penang, Kedah and Perlis coordinated and organized by university partners namely UMS, UNIMAS, UMK, USM and UniMAP respectively.
The objective of this program is to provide opportunities to under privileged children in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM), to develop life skills – innovative problem-solving, design thinking, resilience, persistence, collaboration and pitching and to inspire continuous learning through systematic exposure to open-source software and hardware.
In the current Industrial Revolution 4.0 (IR4.0) era, student are not only required to excel in academic but also to be more competitive in technological-related skills. Therefore, initiative and support from government could be seen especially in developing students in those skills. This exposure is vital to nurture computational thinking that is required in development of problem solving skills.
Grand prize winners, Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Seri Perling and Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Bandar Uda Utama, will be representing Johor to YMC@AC National on 2nd May 2019. They carried home certificates of achievement, cash money valued at RM200, a plaque, Maker Uno sponsored by Cytron Technologies SDN BHD. Consolation prizes winner are Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Felda Ulu Tebrau, Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Taman Desa Jaya and Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Taman Johor Jaya 1. They carried home certificates of achievement, cash money valued at RM150, a plaque, Maker Uno sponsored by Cytron Technologies SDN BHD.
Johor State Level YMC@AC was organized by UTM Centre for Student Innovation and Technology Entrepreneurship (UTM XCITE) in partnership with U.S. Embassy and supported by Johor Department of Education and Ministry of Education as well as Johor Bahru City Council. Welcoming speech was given by also attended by Mr Bradley Hurst, Counselor of Public Affairs, US Embassy. The program is officiated by Deputy Secretary of Johor Bahru’s Mayor, Ir.Hajah Nazatul Shima Binti Mohamad. The event was held at Sultan Ismail Library, Larkin.
22 April 2019, Skudai – More than 300 UTM students participated in the inaugural Sustainable Entrepreneurial Mindset Showcase 2019 (SEMS 2019) organized by UTM Centre for Student Innovation and Technology Entrepreneurship (UTM XCITE), UTM Office of Undergraduate Studies and Kolej Tuanku Canselor’s Student Council on 22nd of April 2019. The event was held at Dewan Astana, Kolej Tuanku Canselor (KTC) and Division of Innovation, UTM XCITE.
Sixty-two products based on fourteen United Nation Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were showcased during the event. Every group was given 10 minutes to pitch and demonstrate their innovations to judges from industry as well as academic. The purpose of the event was to expose UTM students to entrepreneurial activities, which include the vital processes of validating ideas and prototype development.

They were supervised by Dr. Mohd Khairuddin Ramliy (AHIBS). Feeders, a group from School of Computing supervised by Dr Azurah A. Samah (SC), with their product Cat2Feed won second place while third prize went to Y-Not from Faculty of Science with their product S’ Bags. S’ Bags was supervised by Dr Mahadi bin Bahari (AHIBS).
The closing ceremony was attended and officiated by Prof. Ir. Dr. Zainuddin Abd Manan, the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic and International) UTM and also attended by Assoc. Prof. Dr Mohd Zaidi Abd Rozan, Director of UTM XCITE, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Intan Zaurah Binti Mat Darus, Deputy Chairman of UTM Office of Undergraduate Studies, and Madam Rafidah Binti Mohamad, a representative from Kolej Tuanku Canselor.
Based on UTM XCITE agenda, the winner of SEMS will be enrolling into advanced programs to scaffold and specifically reinforce their prototype and business model.
23 Oct 2018, Bangi: UTM students once again demonstrate what they are made of when they won two out of five main prizes at MTDC Business Challenge 2018 (MTDC 2018).
Abu Hassan Al-Basri Abd Malek from School of Electrical Engineering and Lai Cong Yan from School of Mechanical Engineering won the second prize with their innovative product, Rubber Tapping Robot. They took home RM 500 in cash, fund for product development valued at RM 7500, mentorship program with MTDC, hamper and also certificates of appreciation. Abu Hassan said his team’s product revolutionizes agriculture sector and their focus is to advance rubber industry in Malaysia to be one of the best rubber manufacturer in the world. “We created ‘Narutobot’, a rubber tapping robot, which it can be installed in the plant. Narutobot has proficient tapping system and high precision. It is controlled by IoT system, so that we do not have to come to rubber plantation every morning. We are thankful for Malaysia Technology Development Corporation (MTDC) and UTM Centre for Student Innovation and Technology Entrepreneurship (UTM XCITE) for the creating the platform for us to bring forward our product to the market.”

Another team from UTM, EduAR, bagged home fourth prize with RM 500 in cash, fund for product development valued at RM 4500, mentorship program with MTDC, hamper and certificates of appreciation. EduAR is represented by Tong Xin Jo from School of Civil Engineering and Albert Chong Ming Cai from School of Chemical Engineering.
For Tong Xin Jo, MBC 2018 helps her determine the right and most sustainable business model through thorough validation using Business Model Canvas (BMC). “BMC is very important knowledge for my team as we are also at first uncertain about the right business model for our product. I take this opportunity to thank MTDC and UTM XCITE for organizing such an amazing event for undergraduate students in Malaysia to showcase their talents and skills.”
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mohd Zaidi Abd Rozan, Director of UTM XCITE, said 9 teams from UTM including 2 from Malaysia-Japan International Institute of Technology (MJIIT) were selected out of 120 submitted participations. “This is the best performance so far. UTM XCITE through its industrial partners and various agencies are actively seeking ways to ensure UTM students can gain first-hand experiences in innovation and entrepreneurship development.”
He also said that this MBC 2018 also involved 11 UTM students from various schools such as School of Electrical Engineering, School of Mechanical Engineering, Azman Hashim International Business School (AHIBS) as volunteers. “MBC 2018 has provide platform for volunteers to gain experience in organizing event as well as enhance their generic skills.” He added.
Aleeya Mohd Roslee, a third year student from AHIBS, said, “the best experience throughout this program is that I was able to observe how investors identify which products are market-ready based on product value, cost strategy and market readiness.”
MBC 2018 is inaugural competition organized by MTDC in collaboration with UTM XCITE. Committee members of MBC 2018 involved UTM lecturers from various schools: Dr. Umar Haiyat Abd Kohar (UTM XCITE), Dr. Farrah Merlinda Muharam (AHIBS), Dr. Adriana Mohd Rizal (AHIBS), Dr. Adaviah Mas’od (AHIBS), Dr. Zuraidah Sulaiman (AHIBS), Assoc. 18 September 2018 – Nescafe helps you to awaken to new opportunities and start new conversations, develop friendships and rekindle old ones.
The opening ceremony was held last weekend on Tuesday, graced by the attendance of TNCP Prof Azlan Abdul Rahman, Assoc. Prof. Dr Mohd Zaidi Abd Rozan from UTM XCITE and also Mr Jeffrey Samsul Bahrin. The launching of the Nescafe @UTM also means the launching of a new drink – the MyUTM drink.
“We want to make the university more Vibrant,” said Dr Azlan , the university need more programs like this to spruce up the educational environment and make it more happening.
The Nescafe @UTM is wholly run by 11 UTM students from various backgrounds, who are passionate about bringing you coffee that will leave you energised for your studies and daily life.
Bryan Chua Seck How, Programme Director of Nescafe @UTM said, he joined the programme to learn more about entrepreneurship and to bring more colours to the university.
The Nestle Youth Entrepreneur programme hopes to develop and future young ambitious entrepreneurs who have the courage to try, the will to be persistent and the entrepreneurship spirit to inspire new ideas and experience real-world entrepreneurship.
The programme is a competition amongst 12 other competing universities around Malaysia. The judging criteria will be based on the sales, marketing strategies and the Innovation of a bring new drink – Signature drink that will be launched around the end of October.
Nescafe @UTM is opened on weekdays from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Arif Tukiman started small with his team Amir Fazwan and Ahmad Fikrizaman during their undergraduate studies in Faculty of Computing, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM). They have transformed many of their classes’ projects and also their Final year’s projects into applications that are currently being used by many particularly UTM communities.
During their postgraduate studies in Master of IT Entrepreneurship in UTM, they have established a company by the name of Sejuk Studio or also known as Cool Code (coolcode.my), where they started to seriously venture into many projects. Due to that, they have won the Malaysia Ministry of Higher Education Entrepreneurial Awards MOHE (MEA) “Best Enterprise Award” in 2015 under the guidance of UTM Technology Entrepreneurship Centre (UTMTEC), currently known as UTM XCITE. Cool Code is also being incubated under the purview of Media and Game Innovation Centre of Excellence (MAGICX), UTM.
On 21st September 2018, they have won the MSC Malaysia Asia Pacific ICT Awards (MSC Malaysia APICTA) 2018 in two categories -The Best Start up and The Best ICT Services Solution – through their 2017 launched company named RunCloud.io.
RunCloud.io is a truly unique SaaS (Software as a Service) that enables administrators to setup, configure, manage and monitor Virtual Private Servers, which focuses mainly on PHP developers and web design freelancers. Arif is the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Amir Fazwan is the Chief Operating Officer (COO) combined with marketing affair. While Fikrizaman was made Chief Technology Officer (CTO) due to his unique home brewed technology that become the foundation for RunCloud.io today.
28 August – In the midst of the upcoming Merdeka celebration, UTM Centre for Student Innovation and Technology Entrepreneurship (UTM XCITE) had welcomely received a visit by a delegation from College of Islamic Studies (CSI), Prince of Songkla University (PSU), Pattani Campus, Thailand. Even though a journey from Pattani to Johor Bahru took around 16 hours, the 14-strong delegation which were led by Assit. Prof. Suthisak Duereh, Deputy Dean for Strategies and Organization Development, looked ecstatic when they arrived at UTM XCITE. The delegates was welcomed by Assoc. Prof. Dr Mohd Zaidi Abd Rozan, Director of UTM XCITE.
A.P. Dr Mohd Zaidi Abd Rozan had given a brief introduction about UTM XCITE to all the delegates. He also briefed them about activities organized by UTM XCITE for the past years and for the next few months. During the visit, a fruitful discussion between the delegation and UTM XCITE had also taken place. A range of issues including participation of students in entrepreneurial-related activities, entrepreneurial awareness among staff and students and also entrepreneurial culture in UTM were also part of the meeting’s agenda. In his brief speech before the end of the visit, Assit. Prof. Suthisak Duereh thanked UTM XCITE for the willingness to receive the visit. He also stressed that this visit could open up the opportunity for UTM XCITE and CSI to engage in a profound relationship.
UTM XCITE looks forward to deepening further strategic collaboration with CSI PSU. UTM XCITE would like to take this opportunity to thank Prof Mohamad Hassan Osman from Azman Hashim International Business School (AHIBS), UTM Kuala Lumpur for arranging this visit.

20 August, 2018 – Entrepreneurial Leaders Programme (ELP) Series 3 was held from 11 August to 17 August 2018 at Tenera Hotel, Bangi, Selangor.
Four representatives from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) were chosen to participate in the programme which was organised by Ministry of Education, Malaysia. UTM was represented by Dr. Md Afendi M Yusuf, Dr. Yong Ee Ling, Dr. Hadafi Fitri Mohd Latip and Dr. Normal Binti Mat Jusoh. The main purpose of the programme was to enhance the entrepreneurial knowledge among academia. This would ensure them to have the right information and knowledge to assist the progression of entrepreneurial culture in UTM as well as to cultivate the entrepreneurial mindset among staff and students.

For Dr Yong Ee Ling, ELP was an exciting event that brings out the best of her. “It was about a program of growing yourself prior to growing others, an important traits that all leaders should have. It taught us a lot of know-how in bringing out the best in a team and also to pull the team together moving towards a common goal. Only then much work can be accomplished regardless of challenges once all understand and shared the same values.” She said.

As one of the most prestigious universities in Malaysia, UTM once again accelerates to full throttle in promoting entrepreneurship among its members. Therefore, on 13th August 2018, UTM XCITE in collaboration with the Malaysia’s Embassy of the United States of America UTM has collaborated with Azman Hashim International Business School (AHIBS) in organising the ‘Innovation and Technology Entrepreneurship Forum: An experience from Silicon Valley’. Seven illustrious women technology entrepreneurs from Silicon Valley were specially invited as speakers of the forum. The event which was held at the newly officiated building of AHIBS had attracted a number of audiences from diverse backgrounds including lecturers as well as students.

The forum, which was intended to promote technology and social entrepreneurship among the UTM community, was divided into two sessions. The first session delved into the colourful journey as technology entrepreneurs of the invited speakers. The speakers for the first session were Diana Macias (Twitter Inc), Bianca Liederer (Genentech Inc) and Sandra Chen (Facebook Inc). In the second session, the audiences were given the opportunity to listen to three other speakers Rekha Pai Kamath (Fast Forward), Maile Smith (Northgate Enviromental Management) and Erin Keely (Techwomen) discussing on the topic about social entrepreneurship in Silicon Valley from their point of views. At the end of each session, the audiences were allotted times to ask questions. Some of the questions asked by the audiences were about topics ranging from work-and-life balance as a career woman to the working experiences in big multinational companies in Silicon Valley.

Both of the sessions were moderated by Dr Aliyu Isah Chikaji. The forum was officiated by Dr Suresh Ramakrishnan, Deputy Dean Research and Innovation of Azman Hashim International Business School. Tokens of appreciation were presented by Assoc. Prof. Dr Mohd Zaidi Abd Rozan, Director of UTM XCITE accompanied by Assoc. Prof Dr Nurul Ungku Norulkamar Ungku Ahmad, Director of Business Admin (AHIBS), to the moderator and invited speakers, marking the end of the forum.

In the afternoon, the guests were invited to a half-day event ‘Science Meets Business’, which was organised by Innovation and Commercialisation Centre (ICC). Investors, entrepreneurs and researchers as well as lecturers were given opportunities to meet the featured guests, presented their ideas and ventures and to get information and immediate assessment on their products.

Science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education plays a significant part in accommodating technological progress and innovation in developed countries as well as their developing counterparts. Nonetheless, a recent trend shows lack of interest among students to pursue career in STEM-related fields. Exposing students as early as possible to the potential career pathways in STEM-related fields remains a real obstacle. However, studies show educating students when they are still in schools and providing them with someone to idolize as role models, could ameliorate the situation.
Universiti Teknologi Malaysia as the forefront university in technology and engineering has taken a step forward in addressing this issue. On 12 August of 2018, UTM XCITE in collaboration with Embassy of the United States of America had organised a one day event called STEM Engagement @SMK Bandar Uda Utama to promote STEM among students and inspire them to pursue career in STEM-related fields. A group of seven US TechWomen entrepreneurs from Silicon Valley was brought to SMK Bandar Uda Utama to engage and experience how STEM culture being nurtured in the school. SMK Bandar Uda Utama was chosen as it is the adopted school under UTM XCITE. Among the delegates was Madam Rekha Pai Kamath who is an entrepreneur and mentor from Fast Forward, a startup accelerator which provides support, mentorship and access to financial capital for emerging companies.

Twenty-first century mode of teaching and learning was demonstrated by a teacher from SMK Bandar Uda Utama. Apart from that, the school has also organised STEM-related games; students were given tools and materials to develop their inventions. Later in the evening, students from SMK Bandar Uda Utama and a few from SMK Sultan Ismail were given opportunities to share their creative inventions to the visitors. Innovative inventions such as smart brick, automated warning system, key apps finder, parking lots detector and many more have attracted the interest of the visitors. The guests expressed their gratitude towards the warm welcome they had received from the organiser and the students. The event, which started at 2.00 p.m., ended at 5.00 p.m.

July 9th 2018 Cyberjaya – Victory for UTM, winning 12 Prizes out of 16 categories in the Innovate Malaysia Design Competition 2018 where four teams were awarded Champion, two teams winning the 1st place, four teams won the 2nd runner up and another two teams grabbed the Consolation prizes. This year, the Best of the Best team is also won by UTM, and the team has been awarded the Innovate Malaysia Excellence Award 2018.
Innovate Malaysia Design Competition 2018 is a multi-disciplinary engineering design competition for undergraduates in Malaysia. It is co-organized by 8 technology leaders in the industry, supported by Ministry of Education (MOE), MaGIC and the Institution of Engineers, Malaysia. This has been the largest design competition in Malaysia over the years and a platform to groom and acquire engineering talents; to promote adoption of industry platforms in the universities. In short, this programme prepares the brightest talents in pursuit of careers in high-value jobs, further studies, or technology start-ups. The Innovate Malaysia Design Competition 2018 has received registration of 516 teams consisting of more than 900 students. Only 59 teams were selected as the finalist and from UTM, 12 teams were selected as the finalist.
The Technology Track Award is supported by Google, Intel, KEYSIGHT Technologies, MathWorks, Microsoft, SAS, SILTERRA, SOLIDWORKS and Celcom, Cyberview, Daikin, Exabytes, Telekom Malaysia, and WCS who contributed to the Design Challenge Award. Two special categories are Best Paper from Institute of Engineers Malaysia (IEM) and the Best Video award.

The team spearheaded by Lim Ji Chen, Chin Linn Kern and Matthias Tiong Foh Thye focusing on problems in construction sites mainly on Workplace Safety and Security using Deep Learning Application, has won the Excellence Award (Best of the Best) and First Prize Award under Google Track. The team won RM4500 and a trip to Google Regional HQ in Singapore for a Machine Learning/AI Workshop. “We provide not only solution to construction industry but also focusing on better business model for them”, said Mr Lim Ji Chen the project leader who is also known as Jason. Jason Lim, Chin Lin Kern and Mattias Tiong have been working hard for the past several months.
“The team has won the heart and confidence of the two groups of judges through its innovative ecosystem of solution. They are able to make significant connection from every solution they provide”, said Assoc. Prof. Dr Ramesh K S @ Mohd Zaidi Abd Rozan, Director of UTM Centre for Student Innovation and Technology Entrepreneurship (UTM XCITE). Dr Zaidi and Dr Mohd Shahrizal Rusli are the supervisors for this project.

Solving ageing population problems are the main goal for the “Joy” Service Robot. With Joy, the feeling of loneliness and depression would be reduced as Joy is aim to be a companion for the elderly.

TaBOT is a project to increase the satisfaction and loyalty of customers through Artificial Intelligence Chatbot and has won the Celcom Design Challenge Award. This project aims to engage and educate customers about the products and services provided by companies.
MathWorks Track 1st Runner Up with their project entitled Automatic Prescription Lens Calculator for Myopia using Machine Vision and Proximity Sensor. Team members are Liew Tian Chin and Albert Sia Kah Dak. The Project supervisor is Dr Amirjan Nawabjan (School of Electrical Engineering)
The purpose of the project is to develop a machine vision solution to perform simple and highly accurate eye examination for myopia patient. A conventional eye care services requires the person to be presence with an optometrist. With this device, a real-time method to estimate the level of myopia is developed. Patients could now perform their own myopia examination anywhere and anytime conveniently.
Microsoft Track 1st Runner Up with their project entitled Machine Learning on Fetal Distress during Pregnancy by Lee Kong Yong, Tew Ken Sam, Cheah Weng Soon and supervised by Dr Yeong Che Fai and Dr Eileen Su Lee Ming (School of Electrical Engineering)
The project title is Machine Learning on Fetal Distress during Pregnancy. “bbCare”, is a portable IoT device which can help a pregnant mother to monitor her the condition of her fetus during pregnancy. Fetal electrocardiogram (ECG) and electrohysterography (EHG) are collected and sent to a smartphone for signal processing and transform into cardiotocography (CTG), and then the extracted features of the CTG are sent to Azure Cloud for Machine Learning and online data storage. This project is also clinically advised by Dr Woon Shu Yuan from Hospital Sultanah Aminah, Johor Bahru. The team members are Lee Kong Yong, Tew Ken Sam and Cheah Weng Soon from FKE. The team is supervised by Dr Yeong Che Fai and Dr Eileen Su Lee Ming.
SAS Track 2nd Runner Up: Robotics Diagnosis System Based on Big Data Analytics and Machine Learning. The team members comprised of Tay Yee Yang, The Zhi Huei, Chin Hung Vui and they were supervised by Dr Yeong Che Fai (School of Electrical Engineering)
With the complexity level and increasing number of machinery in manufacturing plants, this has created monitoring problems. This project introduces four significant features that are visualization, fault diagnosis, optimization through Machine Learning and remote maintenance using Augmented Reality. This is a complete system fully utilizing industry data and it can provide immediate feedback to the user.
Silterra Track 2nd Runner Up with Multiplierless DCT for Fast and Energy Efficient Image and Video Compression. The team members consist of Nurul Nazikha Ab Rahim, Raja Danish Iskandar Raja Kamal Azali and Dr Ab Al-Hadi Ab Rahman (Supervisor)

This project presents a development of a system which transfer power wirelessly, where it enables to charge low power electronic devices without the presence of a cable. This is made possible by using magnetic resonant coupling technique. This is safe for low frequency (700-850kHz) and suitable for low power electronic gadget & implantable medical device application

UTM XCITE
14 Mei 2018 – Program Pengaturcaraan Mikropengawal dan Pemikiran Komputasional kepada Jurulatih Utama Reka Bentuk Teknologi, Jabatan Pendidikan Negeri Johor (JPNJ) telah diadakan pada 13-15 Mei 2018 bertempat di Silka Hotel, Johor Bahru.
Tujuan utama program ini adalah untuk memberikan pendedahan asas dan kemahiran menggunakan mikropengawal (microcontoller) kepada 22 Jurulatih Utama (JU) Reka Bentuk Teknologi (RBT) Negeri Johor. JU yang hadir datang dari daerah-daerah seluruh Negeri Johor merangkumi daerah Kluang, Segamat, Tangkak, Kota Tinggi, Kulai, Pontian, Pasir Gudang dan juga Johor Bahru.
Dr Afnizanfaizal Abdullah dan Prof. Madya Dr Mohd Zaidi Abd Rozan selaku Master Trainer telah melaksanakan program ini dengan kerjasama dari Pusat Inovasi Mahasiswa dan Keusahawanan Teknologi UTM (UTM XCITE), MDEC (Malaysian Digital Economy Corporation) dan juga Jabatan Pendidikan Negeri Johor (JPNJ). Menurut Prof. Madya Dr Mohd Zaidi Abd Rozan, “Program ini bukan sahaja memberikan kemahiran asas menggunakan Arduino dalam melaksanakan pelbagai ujikaji, malah JU juga diberikan pendedakan berkaitan dengan konsep Pemikiran Komputasional (Computational Thinking-CT) dan aplikasi, khususnya Decomposition, Pattern, Abstraction, Algorithm, Logical Reasoning dan Evaluation. Beberapa Unplugged Activities juga diadakan bagi mensimulasikan konsep CT ini.
Turut bersama dalam program ini adalah En Noor Azam Bin Yusoff, Penolong Pengarah Teknik dan Vokasional, Jabatan Pendidikan Negeri Johor.
The Biznovate Business Pitching 2018 Competition was held on 29th April 2018 at FM Convention Hall Faculty of Management, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, Johor organised by Faculty of Management UTM, UTM XCITE and UTM CIDU. This competition were sponsored by BIT EXTREME Internet & Software Solutions and ACFI Fourth Industrial Revolution Training Centre Sdn Bhd. Remarkably this is the first time where a competition was held with full sponsorship from the private sectors without using any funds from UTM.
The purpose of organizing Biznovate Business Pitching 2018 competition was to uncover creative and innovative entrepreneurial ideas from fresh, young and talented entrepreneurs.
The competition comprised of two levels which are the preliminary round (where every team has to pitch) and the finals. Six finalist competed in the finals.
The theme of the competition comprised of three categories which are Creative Content and Mobile Apps, Innovative Product and Social Entrepreneurship.
Students from different courses and faculties participated in this competition to express their interesting ideas to the judges and sponsors.
Some ideas were really creative, innovative and entrepreneurial that grabbed the judges interest.
The winners were awarded cash prizes of RM500 and runner up were awareded with cash prizes of RM 300 for every categories.
There was also special award which was the ACFI Sdn Bhd Best Presenter Award and Bit Extreme Infotech Sdn Bhd Gold Award.

25 April 2018 – Pusat Inovasi Mahasiswa dan Keusahawanan Teknologi UTM (UTM XCITE) dengan kerjasama Kementerian Pendidikan Malaysia (KPM) and Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) telah mengadakan Majlis Graduasi Kursus Pensijilan Pemikiran Komputasional & Sains Komputer 2017 bertempat di M-Suite Hotel, Johor Bahru, Johor.
Majlis ini diadakan bagi meraikan graduan-graduan yang terdiri daripada guru-guru sekitar negeri Johor, Pahang, Negeri Sembilan dan Melaka yang berjaya menamatkan Kursus Pensijilan Pemikiran Komputasional dan Sains Komputer 2018. Bilangan graduan yang berjaya menamatkan kursus dengan jayanya ini ialah seramai 118 orang.
Kursus Pensijilan Pemikiran Komputasional & Sains Komputer 2017 merupakan inisitaif kerajaan Malaysia melalui MDEC dan KPM bagi melatih guru-guru agar mahir dengan pengetahuan dan kemahiran sains komputer, termasuk kemahiran pengaturcaraan dan juga memahami dan menggunakan strategi pedagogi yang sesuai untuk pengajaran pemikiran komputasional dan sains komputer (CTCS). Peserta program ini telah melalui latihan selama 40 jam secara “face to face” dengan Master Trainer yang terdiri daripada pensyarah-pensyarah UTM. Mereka juga diberikan tugasan seperti projek pengaturcaraan (programming), menyediakan kertas cadangan bagi siasatan bilik darjah (classroom investigation) dan video laporan.
Majlis ini telah dirasmikan oleh Yang Berbahagia Prof. Dr. Shahrin Mohammad, Pro Naib Canselor (Strategi) UTM. Wakil Pengarah Pendidikan Johor, Pn. Sallina Hussain, Ketua Sektor Pengurusan Akademik, Jabatan Pendidikan Negeri Johor dan wakil MDEC, En. Johan Termizi, Pengurus, Educator Readiness, Talent & Digital Entrepreneurship Division, turut hadir ke majlis ini dan pengarah UTM XCITE, Prof Madya Dr Mohd Zaidi Abd Rozan juga hadir.

Prof. Madya Dr. Mohd Zaidi Abd Rozan memaklumkan juga bahawa “UTM melalui UTM XCITE telah diberi mandat oleh MDEC bagi meneruskan lagi pelaksanaan program Kursus Pensijilan Pemikiran Komputasional dan Sains Komputer bagi tahun 2018 ini. Selain itu, UTM XCITE juga telah diberi mandat untuk melaksanakan Bengkel Micro-controller bagi Jurulatih Utama KPM yang terlibat dalam pengajaran mata pelajaran Reka Bentuk Teknologi (RBT) yang juga akan diadakan pada bulan Mei 2018 akan datang.”

Day 1 – 10 March 2018
On the 10th of March 2018, a group of CEOs (participants of the SME@UTM 2017 programme) departed to India for the SME@UTM 2017 Industrial Visit. The participants gathered at the UTM XCITE’s compound before embarking on a 4 hour journey to KLIA via bus. Exactly at 1850 pm, the group departed to New Delhi on MH 190 to Indira Gandhi airport. After a short hop to New Delhi, we arrived at the Indira Gandhi Airport where our travel agent in India were waiting for us. We stayed a night at the Suncourt Yatri Hotel at the outskirt of New Delhi for a few hours before moving to New Delhi Railway Station, early morning on the next day.
Day 2 – 11 March 2018
We boarded the New Delhi- Amritsar Swarna Shatabdhi Express 12029. The train departed on time and we arrived at Phagwara Junction at 1230 pm due to an half hour delay. We were greeted by Mr Raj Nidhi Sharma, Deputy Director, Lovely Professional University (LPU) and his subordinates at the Phagwara Junction Station.
After a lavishing Northern India Vegetarian Lunch, we were given a campus tour of the Lovely Professional Univeristy. The entourage were then moved to the Chancellery building for the Indo-Malaysia Industries Meet-up hosted by LPU. The session was attended by the top management of LPU and entrepreneurs from Jalandhar and Phagwara. The participants were briefed on the current business situation in the Punjab region as well the opportunities for Malaysian entrepreneurs. During the networking session, Malaysian entrepreneurs mingle with their Indian counterpart. Several entrepreneurs were interested in our kindergarten business operated by one of our entrepreneurs. There were lots of keen questions being thrown by the Indian entrepreneurs as they were putting a serious focus on early childhood education.
At night, the delegates were brought to the Rangla Punjab, one of landmarks in Phagwara, showcasing the Punjabi’s way of life and also traditional Punjabi cuisine.
Day 3 – 12 March 2018
The day begins with a meeting with top officials from LPU together with officers from UTM, SMECORP and a focus group of CEOs. The agenda of the meeting comprised on how to find common grounds and how can LPU benefit from the SME@Univeristy Programme and how it can be executed in Punjab Region. Other than that, UTM and LPU discussed the prospects of working together through student/staff exchange, introduction of entrepreneurial subjects to LPU through UTM expertises and also how UTM created networks with industries. From the session, besides trying to bridge on business activities, it is realized that the Indian counterparts also took education and its quality seriously. The sharing session on how education in early chilhood, entrepreneurship and research may stregthened university and industrial ties highlights various opportunities in potential businesses. Education become a focal point in this discussion, as LPU is well known in one of the contributors towards social and economic developer in Punjab.
Later on, the delegates visited Uniparts India Ltd. The delegates were welcome by Mr Jaswinder Singh Bhogal, Vice President of Uniparts India. Uniparts India is a leading manufacturer and supplier of 3-point linkage solutions to the Indian market. Uniparts India is a well-recognized exporter of agriculture and construction equipment components to significant geographies such as US, Europe, Japan, and Latin America and has consistently been recognized (along with its subsidiaries) as a leading exporter in the category by EEPC. The factory in Ludhiana focuses on developing and creating machinery parts for agricultural industries.
In the afternoon, the delegates attended a session with the Chamber of Industrial & Commercial Undertaking (CICU), Ludhiana. CICU is a non-profit organization with members comprising of 10000 entrepreneurs throughout the Punjab region. The session were attended by Mr DPS Kharbanda (Punjab State Director of Industries & Commerce), Mr. Upkar Singh Ahuja (President of CICU) and Mr Raj Nidhi Sharma (Deputy Director, LPU). Both Mr Kharbanda and Mr Upkar Singh highlighted the potential of Malaysia and India industrial linkages in many fields. Mr Kharbanda also welcome the Malaysia trade to the Punjab region and also highlighted incentives to those who were interested. “The Punjabis are known for innovation and hard work and Punjab is the best place to do trade” as stated by Mr DPS Kharbanda.
Through a semi-formal networking session held afterwards, Malaysian and Indian entrepreneurs found a potential business matching in manufacturing and construction. Attendees from both countries were immersed in exchanging information, to see how they are able to support one another. The discussion also circulating on how the two parties were able to learn from each other experience and see the possibilities to adapt it, thus businesses have better opportunity to be more efficient.
Day 4 – 14 March 2018
We departed from LPU Hotel very early in the morning to catch the 623 am train to New Delhi. After a 4 hour journey, we begun a half day city tour before departing back to Malaysia on the same day.
